Track runs Penn InvitationalBy Therran Dennis Staff Writer Last Saturday, the Salisbury University men’s and women’s track and field teams competed in the Penn Invitational at Franklin Field, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. The Sea Gulls held their own in competition as they were one of the 40 NCAA schools (Division I-III) that were invited to compete in the meet. Several sponsored club teams were also invited to take part in the invitational. The Sea Gull men were led by junior sprinter Cory Beebe, who competed in both the 400-meter hurdles, the 110-meter hurdles and the 4x400 relay team. Beebe placed first overall in the 400-meter with a time of 53.34 seconds and placed second overall in the 110-meter with a time of 14.88. The 4x400 meter relay team of freshman sprinter Paul Moore, junior sprinter Quentin Briscoe, junior sprinter Mike Marfut and Beebe placed fourth with a time of 3.23.01, finishing behind Columbia, La Salle and the College of New Jersey. Junior sprinter Delannie Spriggs ran to a first place victory in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.78 seconds. Spriggs also finished second in the 200-meter with a time of 21.94. Junior athlete Brandon Fugett placed second in the discus as he threw for a personal best distance of 161 feet and three inches. Fugett also placed second in the shot put with a toss of 52 feet, three quarters and three inches, the furthest thrown distance by all Division III shot putters so far in the season. Fugett’s throw helped improve his provisional status for the Division III outdoor championships. Junior distance runner Bill Nastasiak placed fifth in the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9.58.36. Nastasiak was the top Division III runner at the meet. The women were represented by sophomore distance runner Masha Berge who placed 17th in the women’s 5,000-meter run with a time of 19.38.77. During the same day, SU sent several athletes to Towson to compete in the Goucher College Track and Field Classic. Freshman Rachael Holtzman came in third in the women’s shot put (31 feet, nine and a half inches) and the women’s hammer throw (102 feet, 10 inches). Freshman Jay Drenner also had a pair of third place finishes as he placed in the shot put (41 feet, one and a half inch) and the discus (124 feet, five inches).
