Softball soars over the Eagles

Last Saturday, the No. 18-ranked Sea Gulls hosted CAC foe Mary Washington in a double header. Head coach Margie Knight and assistant coaches Tom Stitcher and Tee Dronenburg led the Sea Gulls.

Coming into the game, the Sea Gulls were riding a 17-game winning streak and Mary Washington was looking to end that streak. In the first game, both teams were neck-and-neck playing excellent defense with great pitching and fielding. Although Mary Washington played well throughout the game, Salisbury changed the tide when junior catcher Lauren Brenneman hit a 3-run home run in the bottom of the third inning. After that game changing performance by Brenneman, Salisbury controlled the rest of the game both offensively and defensively, finishing by adding three more runs and not giving up any runs on defense. The final of the first game of the double header was 7-0, a dominant performance by Salisbury all-around.

Senior pitcher Stacy Davis (13-2) led the Sea Gull defense, pitching a complete game shutout with six strikeouts while giving up only five hits. Offensively, the Sea Gulls were led Brenneman’s third inning home run. She ended the game with two hits and four runs batted in.

In game two of Saturday’s double header, the Sea Gulls brought their momentum from the first game. The Sea Gulls scored two runs in the first inning to set the tone for the game, but in the top of the second inning Mary Washington hit a tough home run to bring the Sea Gull lead down to one. The Sea Gulls responded by scoring two runs in the third inning and five runs in the fifth.

The Sea Gulls’ defense did not allow another run to Mary Washington for the rest of the game. The Sea Gulls wrapped the second game up in five innings 9-1, giving them back-to-back wins on Saturday, while increasing the team’s winning streak to 19 games.

Defensively, sophomore pitcher Kelsey Mills led the Sea Gulls. Mills gave up one run and one hit. On the offensive side, senior outfielder Meaghan O’Gara was the star after hitting her sixth homer of the year. Sophomore third baseman Kristin Lord added three runs batted in. After the game, head coach Knight was very excited about the win, and said, "Excellent job defensively and offensively we kept putting the bat on the ball, we have very smart ladies that process information well."

This was a big game for the Sea Gulls, as their season is winding down and they are trying to finish the regular season strong. Coach Knight gave some humor, adding, "They do all the work; they make me look good."

The Sea Gulls next face Gallaudet University in a double header at home on Tuesday at 3 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.
