Just one week after losing their first game in 55 tries to Gettysburg, Salisbury ended another streak. 2,672 fans packed into Sea Gull Stadium Saturday night to witness Salisbury’s first ever CAC loss.

The Stevenson University Mustangs (11-0, 5-0) defeated Salisbury University (11-2, 5-1) 12-8. The game ended Salisbury’s streak of 105 consecutive CAC victories and handed Salisbury their second loss this regular season – something that hasn’t happened since 2002.

On Tuesday night, Salisbury defeated Mary Washington 14-5. The game started slow but the Gulls turned it on, scoring six goals in the third quarter to beat Mary Washington (7-5, 1-4).

Then there was the game on Saturday. Much tension has amounted between Salisbury and Stevenson in recent years and fans traveled down by the busload. The last time these teams met, Salisbury pounded Stevenson 20-10 in the CAC championship and it was obvious that Stevenson had something to prove.

The Mustangs came out firing to start the game, winning the opening face-off and shooting on their first trip down the field, scoring a minute later to take the lead. Salisbury answered right back, leading 3-2 at the end of the first quarter.

Freshman Matt Cannone (2 goals) scored to start the second quarter and put the Gulls up by two. Stevenson then quickly tied the game at four. Junior attackman Mike Winter then scored to give Salisbury the lead 5-4, their final lead of the game, but the Mustangs answered again to go up 6-5 at the half.

The third quarter turned out to be the difference-maker. Salisbury junior Mike Von Kamecke scored to start the quarter, tying the game for the fifth time. However, Stevenson’s offense proved too strong, scoring five goals in the quarter to take their largest lead of the game, 11-6, Salisbury’s largest deficit all season.

The game was characterized by mistakes. The Gulls completed only 50 percent of their clears, recorded four of their seven penalties in the quarter and had eight turnovers. Senior Kylor Berkman was held to just one assist in the game.

The Sea Gulls outshot Stevenson in the fourth quarter, scoring two goals, but it wasn’t enough as the Mustangs ran the clock out on Salisbury. Salisbury’s next game is against St. Mary’s on April 10.
