Students can showcase singing with Salisbury IdolBy Amanda Durski Staff Writer This week begins the annual SOAP event that gives hopeful and talented singers across the campus a chance to show off their skills. Salisbury University: it is time for SU Idol. The singing competition is organized into two stages. The first stage is auditions. Open auditions are on Tuesday, April 7, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the Gulls Nest. Students who want to try out are asked to prepare a one to two minute a capella piece. Instead of Paula, Simon, Randy and Kara, SU Idol’s judging panel will consist of three judges made up of both students and faculty. They will be looking for students with talented voices, charisma and stage presence. From the auditions, the judges will choose who makes it to the final stage. The number chosen depends on how many students try out. Stage two is the final competition, which will take place one week from auditions, on Tuesday, April 14, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Holloway Hall. "The students will be able to pick their own songs for the final competition and have music," said SOAP President Jessica Hicks. "In Holloway Hall, the judges will make their final decision based on talent and crowd reaction." First, second and third place winners will be chosen. The winner will receive a prize package as well as the honor of being the SU Idol. Second and third place winners will also receive prizes. "There are so many talented people at our school," Hicks said. "SU Idol is a great way for them to get out there and be recognized." In years past, SU Idol has been a very popular event with a great turnout. "I want it to get even bigger," said SOAP Concert Chair Brad Deise. "I hope to see the Gulls Nest packed for auditions and big numbers at the final performances." Simon Cowell might not be at SU Idol, but talent definitely will be.
